Views On The River
Why not take a few relaxing minutes, and enjoy beautiful river views, in the park along the Quinnipiac River? Enjoy the sights and sounds of Oyster Boats operating on the Quinnipiac River, and an old-style swing-bridge, made to look just like the historic one it replaced from 1898. If you look closely, on a large screen, you can even see the fish jumping!

What If My Baby Bird Won't Open His Beak?
Переглядів 40714 днів тому
"Save That Bird" presents an essential, helpful tip if, you are having trouble getting your abandoned baby bird to open his mouth, or "gape" for food. We never recommend force-feeding, birds that are injured or sick will not eat. But if you try playing this video, your baby bird will hear the sounds of the other baby birds chirping for food, and your baby bird might open his beak, in unison wit...
Sammy The Sparrow - Raising A Baby Bird

This is a quick recap of how we intervened to rescue this abandoned, newly-hatched sparrow, who was inexplicably in a cold flower pot, loudly chirping for food. He appeared to be dehydrated, cold, and no parent birds or nests in the area. He was in immediate danger of being eaten by a groundhog, skunk, or any of the other predators in this area, so we leapt into action, warmed him up to 90° Fah...

Releasing A Baby Bird

Is it OK to release my baby bird? How do I know when it's time to set my rescued bird free? Can a 'tame' bird survive in the wild? What if my bird has imprinted on me? This short film will attempt to answer some of these questions for you, and help clarify your decision, based upon my own experiences raising abandoned baby birds, and animal research. Sharing and comments are always welcome. Ph...

A bumblebee in need of assistance was found indoors, barely able to move across the floor, and unable to fly. Tried unsuccessfully to let it drink sugar water, but after letting it perch on a fresh dandelion that I picked from outdoors, it drank its fill of moisture and nectar. Then, after recovering, was able to bee on its way. All this, and some interesting "Bumblebee Facts" at the end, enjoy...

    I'm trying to feed a super dehydrated looking sparrow fledgling that I found. It's not opening it's mouth fully like yours though to feed, which makes it hard to put food in. I think it's a bit younger than yours because it's feathers are more bald and pin feathers. I've been trying to get food and water down it though hopefully it works out.

    • @mikeyfranz

      Don't try to give water to a baby bird, they don't really know what to do with it and they either inhale it and drown, or they inhale it and get pneumonia which then is fatal. Just continue to feed damp food, and they will get them moisture from that Properly. Sometimes if you gently touch the top of their beat they will open their mouth. Also, play this video of mine, and when your bird hears that sparrow chirping for food, sometimes it encourages them to also open their beak. If it's already nighttime there, just try it in the morning. If your bird is in a dark room at night, they should sleep through the night.

    Thank you for this info very informative! I was gardening n I saw a baby bird hopping around. I'm thinking maybe it hopped out of the Christmas tree possibly there's a nest! There is no way to put the bird back in the nest I got gloves n picked him up he was gaping. I was scared to have him in my small little yard so I went across the street n put the bird in the neighbors gated fenced-in yard. What's the chance the mother will hear it cry from across the street from my house! Any thoughts on that I'm so worried about this poor little bird. Again I couldn't leave him here due to a stray cat that visits my porch

I did sadly used to use a straw and drop a droplet of water only intot heir mouths after they ate. But, they grew up really strong and fly around to this day!!! So glad I could save them. I know next time not to give them water directly.

    • @mikeyfranz
      @mikeyfranz 8 днів тому

      That is simply not true. A mother bird would never reject her babies due to a smell. (Their sense of smell isn't that finely tuned anyway.) The common consensus nowadays, is that was an "old wives tale" meant to keep children from handling baby birds out of a nest..

    • @michaelbarcz326
      @michaelbarcz326 8 днів тому

      @@mikeyfranz the main reason bird groups/associations keep this " myth " alive is to prevent diseases being transferred to the weak immuned babies. ( And visa versa). Tho it's admirable to ofcourse care for a disabled or ANY type of baby in distress you have to be cognizant of this. The " wives tale" can also expecting the mother to " come feed or take care " of infant. Is she going to put it on its back and carry to new nest ? Feed it daily in the next you have ?( Easter basket).

      @@mikeyfranz Bird associations/ groups keep these " wives tales " alive mainly to keep humans from transmitting diseases to a not completed immune system to baby birds ( and you not getting any) People have to get the notion out of their head(s) that mama bird is gonna swoop down and haul her offspring on its back away to a new nest ... Or come over daily to feed it in a Easter basket. Tho it's admirable to care for ANY living thing in distress and I do the same , it's important to realize what human contact does. I see people leaving them out hoping for mother to return. It is only giving the local cat a play toy or lunch. You can just care until it can fly and pray it's hunting instincts will kick in.

    Seen my cats messing around with what I thought was a mouse...Then I took a better look and seen it was a baby bird. I ran out there and took it away from the cat. Cats normally to not harm their pray but with the playing and pawing the cat scares it's pray to death..I mean for real. The bird was in shock and I wrapped it in a towel. Came back later and it was now opened eyed and sitting up. I ran in and watched your video and did as you did feeding and watering it using dry cat food soaked in water. About 4 hours later I took it outside and let it walk around and birds were flying over my head very close to me. But after 30 minutes they never went near the baby bird as it sat alone. The baby bird is eating and drinking extremely well. Many Many thanks for this video...I hope to as you plan to return this bird to Mom and Daddy Bird......Oh yeah Great rescue of the two birds.

    I need help I found an abandon baby bird no mother was seen. He fell 8 feet to the ground and he or she had siblings were dead and it was very hot and poor little baby is sun burned. I received him the 14 th of June 2024 he is doing better today.I can’t identify him or her he still has fuzzy all over him and no wing sprouts yet. I know what to feed him from your video’s I would like to try and identify him or her I tried but I’m just not sure what kind he is. I guess I’ll have to wait a couple week’s. I’m wondering if he or she has a chance to live I’m up with him or her all night long.can I feed him bloodworms that you feed fish with? They are dried but I put a bit of water on them.

    • @mikeyfranz
      @mikeyfranz 10 днів тому

      You don't have to be up with them all night, as long as you keep the bird warm and snuggly and some kind of warm nest, they will sleep through the night as long as the room is dark like it is dark outside. Then at sun up, maybe 7 AM they'll start chirping for food again. Great job rescuing this little feller. I have often done a Google image search to determine what the baby bird is, it's uncanny how accurate it can be if your photo is clear. It even helped clear up for me some birds that I was given in the past that I thought were starlings, turned out to be a grackle and a Red winged blackbird. Hard to tell when they are first hatched, but Google image search has a pretty good track record of accuracy
